Shiga Prefecture, where koraigen is located, is home to Lake Biwa, the largest lake in Japan. What do Japanese people think of Shiga Prefecture? 80% of them will answer, “Lake Biwa. We have lived here for seven years, and the beautiful scenery of Lake Biwa soothes us every time we see it. Most of the guests who come to our guesthouse are from outside of the prefecture, so we are often asked where we can view Lake Biwa. In fact, there are not many restaurants along the shore of Lake Biwa in the Kohoku area, but I finally found one the other day and went there.
kohaku coffee
A 10-minute drive from our guesthouse, kohaku coffee is located along the lakeshore road to the south and past the tunnel. It is a small café in a renovated old private house, located through a path from the community’s parking lot. It is a cozy space with large windows overlooking Lake Biwa. You can enjoy roasted coffee by region and handmade cakes.
The area is famous for its breathtaking sunsets, and many waterfowl and, in winter, giant eagles come to visit. Chikubu Island can be seen in the distance, offering a peaceful view. The view of the Lake is exceptional, even though the lake is about the same size as central Tokyo. Don’t miss Lake Biwa, whose expression changes with the seasons.
