Nishino Zuido: A Testament to Human Perseverance
Date: June 19, 2024
I recently visited Nishino Zuido in Takatsuki, a place that truly embodies human strength and determination. This drainage tunnel, painstakingly dug by hand over six years about 180 years ago, channels water to Lake Biwa. In the past, this area was frequently plagued by floods, and Nishino Zuido was conceived as a solution. The tunnel spans approximately 250 meters, and digging it manually was no easy feat. However, the unwavering effort to achieve their goal despite the hardships is truly inspiring.
Cultural Significance:
Nishino Zuido is a designated cultural property of Shiga Prefecture. It is an impressive drainage tunnel carved through the base of Nishiyama Mountain in Nishino, stretching 250 meters towards Lake Biwa. The tunnel stands about 2 meters high and 1.5 meters wide.
Historical Background:
This remarkable civil engineering project was initiated 170 years ago by Esho Shonin, the 11th head monk of Jumanji Temple, to protect the flood-prone Nishino area from frequent flooding. Skilled stonemasons were invited from Noto and Ise, and over six years, using only chisels, they dug this tunnel. The project cost 1,275 ryo, a significant sum at the time.
Visitor Information:
Required Items: Flashlight, rubber boots, helmet (available for free rental at the office, but quantities are limited)
Old Tunnel: The original tunnel is just large enough for one person to pass through, and the ground can be slippery due to water. Proper preparation is essential before entering.
New Tunnel: For those who find the old tunnel daunting, there is a new tunnel adjacent to it, about 5 meters in diameter. However, it lacks lighting, so caution is advised.
