Grilled Mackerel Somen: A Taste of Nagahama’s Tradition

If you visit Nagahama, one dish you absolutely must try is saba somen. Saba is a mackerel fish in Japanese. This traditional dish, unique to the Northern Lake region, has been enjoyed for generations as a home-style meal. Historically, it was a special food prepared by mothers who visited their daughters after they had married into farming families in May.

Saba somen consists of thick, tender mackerel grilled and simmered in a sweet and savory broth, paired with thin somen noodles that absorb the rich flavors of the dish. Usually people enjoy it as a side dish alongside a white rice. One of the most famous places to enjoy saba somen is YOKAROU, located in Nagahama’s Kurokabe Square near Nagahama station. This popular restaurant attracts long lines, especially on weekends, with eager customers waiting before opening hours. The combination of the nostalgic, traditional Japanese house setting and the rich, flavorful saba somen makes for an unforgettable dining experience.

Personally, I love the saba somen at YOKAROU. My favorite way to enjoy it is with plenty of sansho pepper and a dash of shichimi spice, which add a delightful kick to the dish.

Since saba somen is a regional specialty you can only find in Nagahama, it’s a must-try for anyone visiting the area. If you have the chance to explore this charming town, make sure to indulge in this unique and delicious local delicacy!
