While writing about the attractions surrounding Guesthouse Ko-Rai-Gen, I realized I haven’t shared much about my own temple. Enjōji Temple is located in the village of Senda in Kinomoto Town. As the name suggests, the temple is surrounded by rice fields, creating a serene and picturesque landscape. During the rice-growing season, the evening walks around the fields are especially beautiful and calming.
A Rich History Spanning Over Six Centuries
Enjōji Temple has a history that dates back to 1340 when it was originally founded by Yugii Genzaemon-no-Jo Kunanawa, who became a monk and established a small hermitage named Mangiyama. In 1464, the temple transitioned to the Jodo Shinshu sect, and in 1496, it was renamed Enjōji. Over the past 600 years, the temple has been lovingly maintained by the local community, preserving its historical significance and tranquil atmosphere.
Tranquility Amidst Nature
Although Enjōji Temple isn’t vast in size, it offers a peaceful retreat where visitors can unwind and reflect. The temple grounds are a quiet sanctuary where the sounds of cars are replaced by the chirping of birds and the gentle hum of insects at night. The natural surroundings provide a perfect backdrop for meditation and relaxation, allowing visitors to experience a true escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life.
Experience Local Culture and Spirituality
Staying at Guesthouse Ko-Rai-Gen gives visitors the unique opportunity to explore this historical temple and immerse themselves in local culture. The temple’s connection to the community is evident in the way it has been preserved and cherished over the centuries. Visitors can enjoy the tranquil environment, learn about the temple’s rich history, and participate in traditional practices that have been passed down through generations.
