Today, my family and I took a drive to Lake Yogo. It’s a perfect spot for a leisurely stroll, with parking available around the lake, allowing you to stop and enjoy the view wherever you like. We particularly enjoyed the south side of the lake, where the shore is free of rough rocks, making it safe for children to play in the water. The peaceful surroundings and beautiful scenery provided a wonderful escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. The lake’s surface, often referred to as “Mirror Lake” for its reflective beauty, added to the serene atmosphere .
Scenic Beauty
Lake Yogo is located in Nagahama City, Shiga Prefecture, and is the second-largest lake in the prefecture, next to Lake Biwa. It spans 1.75 square kilometers and has a circumference of about 6 kilometers. Situated at an elevation of 132 meters above sea level, it offers serene and picturesque views. The lake is surrounded by mountains on three sides, creating a tranquil environment that enchants visitors with its natural beauty .
Historical Significance
Lake Yogo has a deep historical connection with the people of Japan. Approximately 3,000-year-old submerged forests have been discovered here, along with late Jomon period pottery, indicating a long history of human interaction with the lake. The lake is also steeped in legends, such as the tale of the celestial maiden and the story of Princess Kikuishi related to rain rituals. Furthermore, Lake Yogo was a significant site during the Battle of Shizugatake in 1583, where prominent historical figures like Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Shibata Katsuie built numerous forts and castles around the lake.
