Venture beyond Kyoto- your Journey awaits
What is Nagahama City (Shiga) ?
Nestled in Shiga Prefecture, home to Lake Biwa—the largest lake in Japan—Nagahama is a hidden gem waiting to be explored. Located in the northern part of the region, this area features the crystal-clear waters of Lake Biwa, framed by scenic mountains. Adventurers can hike Mount Shizugatake for breathtaking panoramic views of the lake and its picturesque surroundings.
Nagahama’s pristine waters have nurtured thriving rice cultivation for generations. The lush rice paddies remain a hallmark of the region, and local rice is skillfully transformed into exceptional sake and soy sauce, which are celebrated across Japan.
During winter, Nagahama transforms into a snowy wonderland, officially designated as a heavy snowfall area in Japan. These harsh winters have inspired the development of unique culinary traditions, including fermented foods designed for long-term preservation—offering visitors a chance to savor the resourceful spirit of the region. Moreover, this challenging winter environment fostered a deep sense of community, where temples historically functioned as local governing bodies to help villagers survive together. As a result, even small villages feature multiple temples, and Nagahama proudly boasts 507 temples—more than Kyoto itself—preserved through the dedication of the local people.
Nagahama invites you to immerse yourself in Japan’s timeless traditions, pristine nature, and genuine hospitality. Best of all, it’s just a one-hour train ride from Kyoto, making it an ideal destination for travelers seeking a deeper, more authentic connection with Japan.

Sandra2025-05-2610Verified Exceptional Rion2025-05-048.0Verified Very Good ☺ Spacy, clean and comfortable. ☹ Nothing special. Mateusz2025-04-3010Verified Exceptional ☺ It is a nice apartment in a garage loft. The space is spotlessly clean and neatly arranged in a "modern Japanese" style featuring tatami mats, futon beds, shoji doors etc. The host, Asami, is incredibly polite and accommodating. She quickly responded to my messages, picked us up from the train station and never bat an eyelid in response to our "on-the-way" chaotic planning. Asami's husband runs a small buddhist temple. It's very serene and open for the guests. You can also opt in for a guided tour, which we did and liked very much. The bicycles that they provided us (for free!) were very useful for exploring the surroundings. We visited Mount Shizugatake and the Nishino Tunnel. The former has splendid views; the lift was closed but it was a very pleasant walk. Regarding the tunnel: it's good to know there are actually two tunnels, the original and the modern one. This made it very easy to split into two groups (... the Adventurers and the Cowards ...). One great surprise was the Cherry Tree Alley leading to a shrine not far from the Shizugatake lower lift station. We thought we had arrived in Japan too late for the cherry blossoms, but here they had this late blooming variety that allowed us take lovely Sakura photos at the end of April! ☹ Just remember it's real Japanese countryside and not a sightseeing destination. They do have lovely rice paddies but also some busy roads and the overhead power lines will ruin your photos :) It was not a problem for us at all and absolutely in line with what we had expected, but I feel it's important to mention it.

Message from hosts
From Asami, local certified guide and host of Ko-Rai-Gen
Hello! I’m Asami, originally from Nagoya, Japan. In 2017, I got married and relocated to the charming town of Kinomoto, where I decided to create a warm and welcoming space for travelers. During my university years, I studied Spanish, which led me to an exciting career as an interpreter at a Japanese factory in Mexico. My experiences abroad deepened my appreciation for cultural exchange and hospitality, inspiring me to open Ko-Rai-Gen.
At Ko-Rai-Gen, my goal is to offer not just a place to stay, but a home away from home. I love helping my guests discover the local area through private tours, which I personally guide, ensuring they have a memorable experience during their stay.
I look forward to welcoming you to Ko-Rai-Gen and making your stay truly special. Be sure to take some time to relax inside the temple and soak in the peaceful atmosphere!

From Jun, Buddist monk and host of Ko-Rai-Gen
Hello! I’m Jun, the 22nd-generation priest of this temple and your host at Ko-Rai-Gen. Though I wasn’t born here, life brought me to this special place with my wife.Kinomoto is a unique region in Japan, where every village has multiple temples deeply connected to the local community. Traditionally, temples have been open gathering spaces for everyone.
At Ko-Rai-Gen, I want you to feel at home and experience local life. Relax, explore, and ask me anything about Japan or its culture. My wife speaks English and Spanish fluently, but I’m still learning. Enjoy my improving English with every guest who stays!
I look forward to welcoming you and making your stay a memorable one!
